Trench Shields Designed for Custom Pit Applications at Large Airport

A contractor was pouring piers and structural foundations for an airport passenger transportation system at a Gulf Coast airport.  The contractor had classified the soil type as sandy C-60 soil.  The contractor would be dealing with a topography clustered with adjacent structures typical of a large, metropolitan airport including a parking garage and airport service roads. The contractor would be doing several of the foundation pier shafts in consecutive pit excavations and would need a four-sided protective system for workers.  The contractor also needed a system that could be installed and removed relatively easily given the need for multiple excavations and for multiple pits to be open at once.

The contractor contacted NTS to discuss possible shoring options for the project, ultimately selecting a custom four-sided pitted trench shield application with panel lengths ranging from 14-ft to 30-ft. The panels were designed to be pinned together at the corners to allow the contractor flexibility in using the appropriate length panel to form the pit size needed for each foundation pier shaft. The contractor was very satisfied with the pit boxes provided, as well as the interchangeability of the components to ensure maximum utility of the system.
