Slide Rail System Used for Soil Remediation Project
Recently a South Carolina contractor was tasked with performing a soil remediation project at a former manufacturing plant. The project would require a length of 16-ft with a width of 16-ft and a depth of 24-ft cut. The Competent Person on-site classified the sandy soil as Type-C-60.
The project site presented several concerns due to the number of contaminants found in the area. The contractor tested the site and divided the area into three main sections based on the level of toxicity and structure type. The contractor’s first task at hand required the demolition of an existing four-story manufacturing building that would allow access to contaminated material found beneath the structures. Additionally, the contractor needed to decommission a nearby water reservoir structure and remove storm sewer lines that ran through the project site and emptied into a nearby creek. The contractor set up wellpoint systems that would pump out the contaminated water out of the ground running through a series of filtration pipes connecting to a set of frac tanks. The contractor required a protective system that could provide flexibility and protection for the soil inspections at different depths. Additionally, the protective system needed to cohesively work around the wellpoint systems.
The contractor carefully reviewed several protective systems and selected a slide rail system by the process of elimination. The slide rail system is a modular underground protective application that can provide a wide range of excavation support possibilities for a contractor. For this project, the slide rail system was designed as a four-sided pit with slide rail panels and corner posts. The pit slide rail system allowed the contractor to safely access all of the pre-determined contaminated soil areas while the filtration system safely performed toxic extractions. Once the soil remediation was completed the nearby residents and businesses would be assured that the area was safe and free of toxins. The contractor was extremely satisfied with the flexibility and protection provided by the slide rail system during the soil remediation.
