Trench Boxes Used for Soil Revitalization Project and Drainage Upgrade

A Southcentral Texas City needed to revitalize an old drainage creek and turn the area into a cultural park with an outdoor theater and walking trails. The city awarded the project to a joint venture which would be in charge of completing the four phases of the project. The project would require an excavation cut of 22-ft in length, with a width of 8-ft and a depth of 8-ft. The Competent Person on-site classified the sandy soil as sandy Type B and C-60.

The project site would be located in the heart of a historic district where locals and tourists visit on a continuous basis. The excavation cut would be adjacent to a high-in-traffic crossing street and a three-story historic building. The project would require a protective system that could provide support against the pressure load generated from the vehicular traffic and the surrounding buildings. The protective device would also need to incorporate a fall protection system that would allow safe access and egress from the excavation. In addition, the fall protection system would need to effectively provide a safety barrier that could restrict and visibly alert the public to stay away from the construction danger zone.

The contractor selected trench shields with steel plates for the project. Trench shields are modular protective systems composed of light, single or double-wall panels pinned by spreaders. Spreaders come in an array of sizes allowing the protective system to secure the underground at different widths if needed. Trench shields work well with integrated solutions such as the NTS Work Zone Safety System. The NTS Work Zone Safety System is composed of a handrail system, a ladder access platform, and a davit arm. For this project, the contractor selected the handrail system which provided a safety barrier and minimized the chances of having a potential fall. In addition, a ladder access platform was also selected; which provided a secure way of accessing and egressing the excavation. Once the project has been fully completed the historic district will have the proper drainage coverage and reduce the potential of stormwater damaging the existing drainage infrastructure.
